The European Commission has ruled that the Austrian company Altstoff Recycling Austria AG has abused its waste management market monopoly. The proceedings went on for almost six years, and the Commission has now confirmed that ARA prevented competitors from accessing the infrastructure and the waste management market between 2008 and 2012. The European Commission has fined ARA more than six million euros for this breach of the antitrust rules.
"ELS Austria welcomes this verdict," says Managing Director DI Eva Koller. "Competition is a decisive precondition for fair prices for the industry and for consumers, for innovations and for high quality waste management. These goals cannot be achieved with a monopoly, as the developments in other EU member states have long since shown. ELS Austria stands for honest competition at reasonable prices for a reliable and legally compliant service."
